CURRICULUM

At St John’s Church of England Primary school, we are dedicated to providing a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum that supports and challenges every child on their learning journey.

Our aim is to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment where children develop a love of learning, alongside preparing them to be responsible and engaged citizens.  Children at St. John’s engage in learning opportunities which encourage them to work independently and collaboratively in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the world.

Our curriculum is designed to deliver both substantive knowledge (core facts, concepts and information) and disciplinary knowledge (methods, processes and specific ways of thinking) across all subjects. We have an unrelenting focus on embedding key skills and knowledge in order to build our children’s understanding of the world and equip them with the skills to engage with it more deeply. We provide frequent opportunities for retrieval and rehearsal to allow opportunities to strengthen understanding.

High quality books are woven throughout our curriculum to promote a love of reading and expose every learner to new worlds, ideas, and experiences, sparking their imagination and creativity. Our classrooms are language-rich environments that provide challenge and equality of opportunity for all learners.

Our curriculum is closely tied to our physical location and history; and we celebrate our diverse cultural and faith links. New and enriching experiences, including workshops, visits and field work, allow learners to put their knowledge and skills into context making meaningful links and provide opportunities for all pupils to develop and expand their own cultural knowledge

We are particularly proud of our Super Six at St John’s: termly experiences designed to enrich our children’s learning.  All pupils will engage in a memorable experience; an innovative challenge; have a special book to read, have something to investigate, a conversation to have and an opportunity for parental involvement with their learning.

Our curriculum has our golden threads of, Wonder (Intent)  Trust (Implementation)   and   Achieve (Impact) running through it.

‘..The vision for every pupil to ‘live abundantly’ has led to the implementation of a rich and engaging multicultural curriculum. Pupils develop their skills through interesting and relevant lessons and an exciting range of trips and other activities…….with pupils being encouraged to ask deeper questions and to have a sense of awe and wonder in their world. (SIAMS Inspection, March 2019)
