Mathematics at St John's
Our Intent for mathematics
Wonder
It is our intent that, through our mathematics curriculum, pupils at St John’s become fluent in mathematics alongside being able to reason and problem solve mathematically.
In order to implement this, we use the White Rose Maths scheme across the school alongside the NCETM Mastering Number Progamme in EYFS and KS1.
In order to support pupil's learning, lessons are built around introducing new concepts using the CPA approach (concrete, pictorial and abstract). Learning is broken into small steps and scaffold and challenge is built into lessons to ensure that all learners can achieve.
At St. John's we believe in a shared vision that:
Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.... pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
