How you can help at home...

Nursery

Please tell and read your children stories as much as possible, bedtime is an ideal time for this. Please help your child to write their name as we expect that they are able to do this by the time they leave Nursery. You can also help your child to see themselves as a reader by pointing out letters and words to them everywhere you go ie: to Tesco or at the petrol station.

Please help your child to practise counting to 10 as we expect that they are able to do this by the time they leave Nursery. They should also be able to recognise their own age number as well as other numbers up to at least 10. Could you also help them to practise counting different objects so that they learn how one number is spoken for each object.

Please remember to name every item of clothing that your child wears to school. Please help them practise putting on their own coat as well as their own hat and scarf as they should be able to do this by the time they leave the Nursery.

Foundation Stage 2

Your child should be able to write their own name and will know most of the letter sounds and names of the letters in the alphabet. Please help them to practise their developing reading skills by reading their book and their sound book with them every day.

Your child should now be able to count accurately to 20 and will be able to recognise most of these. Please help them to develop this number recognition by spotting numbers everywhere you see them.

Please remember to name every item of clothing that your child brings to school as we are not able to return your lost property to you without this. Your child should now be able to put on their own coat and fasten it as well. They should also be able to entirely dress themselves in the morning so please allow them the time to practise this. If your child has shoe laces for school they should be able to tie these themselves so please help them to practise.

KS1

We would like the children to read a variety of texts as often as possible during the week.  It is important to ask the children questions about the book and pictures within the story, as well as just hearing them read.  Please record their reading in their Reading Record. Also, we would encourage children to supplement their school reading books with those chosen from local libraries or home collections.

Middle School (Year 3 and 4)

We would like the children to read for twenty minutes at least 3 times per week.  It is important to ask the children questions about the text, as well as just hearing them read.  Please record their reading in their Reading Record.

The children are given five spellings on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, which they must learn for a test on Friday.  It will help the children greatly if you can discuss the meaning of the words with them when you are helping them learn the spellings.

The children have times table tests every week, and are regularly asked to add, subtract and divide rapidly as well.  It would help them if you could play quick-fire games at home to help secure these number facts in their heads.

Upper School

We would like the children to read for twenty minutes as often as possible during the week.  It is important to ask the children questions about the text, as well as just hearing them read.  Please record their reading in their Reading Record. This will be checked every Monday and Friday.

The children are given twenty spellings on Monday, which they must learn for a test on Friday.  It will help the children greatly if you can discuss the meaning of the words with them when you are helping them learn the spellings.

The children are required to know all their times tables in order to help them with many aspects of Numeracy such as division, multiplication, fractions and word problems. They are also expected to add and subtract numbers rapidly. It would help if you could play quick-fire games at home to help them secure these number facts in their heads.

The children will be given twenty spellings on Monday which they must learn for a test on Friday. When helping them to learn their spellings please discuss the meaning of the words and how they might be used in a sentence.
