Music

Music at St John’s is highly valued and occurs daily throughout the school. From assemblies where the children present outstanding singing to individual music lessons where children receive outstanding music teaching from specialists, each child demonstrates a love and passion for the subject. Children in Year 3 are lucky enough to receive specialist percussion lessons once a week and have completed many performances at school and at other venues such as The Hexagon over the last few years. The Choir is well established and consists of 40 children. These children have a great love and dedication for singing and have also had the chance to perform in many situations. The Choir enjoys leading singing for the school and also demonstrate their love of music by singing accurate and beautiful harmonies during assemblies and religious services.

Children learn a range of skills from Foundation Stage through to Year 6, building on these year on year. Sound is developed and experimented with in the Foundation Stage through playing different instruments and singing. In Year 6 the children learn specific notation and begin to compose their own music. Musical instruments provide a great resource to support all the learning that goes on in the school and also prove to be a useful addition to any year group's musical production at the end of a term.

Our strong link to Berkshire Maestros enables children to have an opportunity to learn individual guitar and recorder lessons, building on their knowledge of the instrument as well as reading music. These children have performed in front of small groups and the whole school - a fantastic way to build the children’s confidence.
